Raph Koster’s GDC Keynote

Filed under: General — bilbo @ 5:46 pm

Wonderland gave us a synopsis of the GDC Keynote regarding game design by Raph Koster. Raph Koster was (one of?) the designer for Star Wars: Galaxies.

I appreciated the information regarding games as exercises in pattern recognition. That makes sense to me, and explains why I put so many games down. My band between boring and too hard must be fairly narrow.

His idea of getting people to recognize the difference between the game and the “dressing”, or plot, setting, etc. is a bit abstract. Perception is reality as they say. I’m not saying that Grand Theft Auto is teaching our children to kill. It certainly is a game about killing people though.

I will be picking up the book by Raph, as this is not the first time I’ve heard it praised. If it’s anything like the talk, it should be a good read.
